Jacaranda

September blooms of purple hues,
adorn the city street.
And in bright splendour praises Spring,
where limbs and feathers meet.

Amid soft purple hues I lay,
to rest my weary head.
In fantasies drifting away,
upon a sprinkled spread.

Spring is a beautiful time of the year in Brisbane with Jacarandas blooming throughout the city. It’s a very colourful display that leave beautiful lavender sprinkles on the ground. This is without a doubt my favourite tree.

  1. Isn’t it odd …??? We have a street named Jacaranda here in my neighborhood but there are no Jacaranda trees. I wish we did. They are beautiful. I love lavendar. It is my favorite color.
The poem perfectly describes Spring. We are entering our winter – well – it isn’t a severe winter in Florida – and you are entering Spring. So lovely to know that.
This was a great post in so many ways.
    Gracias,

  2. Great picture of Jacarandas in flower.

I always love your command of meter and rhyme. I know some might scan that third line of the first stanza as iambic, since the previous two are and the fourth is, but for me it hints at the next occurrence of a third line (next stanza) being special — their is a little delay caused by bright — there is no way I can pass that over as a weak foot in the second iamb.
After that wonderful line, we get another line of iambs. Then, the fifth and sixth lines are textbook iambic and so following this, that seventh line is special (“fantasies drifting away”) and we close with a last line of iambs. This makes “fantasies drifting away syncopated” against the underlying beat set up previously. This is a real gem! Clearly 5 stars!

All readers take note: this kind of craftsmanship is not haphazard. Even when a poet is so skilled they do this as second nature, just as a jazz musician improvises, this foundation is based on reading lots of poetry and writing lots of poetry. There are no shortcuts to excellence!

    • This is the nicest compliment I have ever received about my poetry!!! Thank you so very much. You are always so encouraging and I really appreciate it. Thanks for your lovely and thoughtful review. It means a lot to me 🙂

  3. Very welcome! Well deserved. Sorry abou the typos (“their is a little delay”, no quotes around bright, no “that” after “skilled.” Always a pleasure to read your work!

  4. We have trees like that we call them cherry blossom and they flower in spring so bright and cheerful, then their blossoms seem to fall in separate petals. Beautiful.
    Lovely piece from you.

  5. I love this poem!! I am off to read more!

Winter looms here in England though it is 18 degrees at the moment.
Our seasons are having “senior moments”!!
