The Cave

Insidiously
gripping
embracing
within its depths,
indiscriminately
paralysing.
Surrendering
to its intensity –
a rose
withering in a
dark
lonely
cold cave,
until
a flicker of light
unexpectedly
unsettles
its stronghold
and
finger
by
finger
it releases its grip
and hope is
rekindled.

  1. Just another thought on this poem.

I think the reason it spoke to me so profoundly is that I have had some very deep bouts of depression in the past and how you describe the coming out of it is spot on.

I have a friend who talks about the torch of hope and how it is always there; we just need to be aware of it. That is not to say it is easy to take hold of when we are in that terrible dark place, but is is nonetheless reassuring when “the flicker of light” begins to shine through.

A special thank you for this one. I think my first comment was so short simply because I was a little wary of opening up.

    Christine.

    • Thanks again Christine. I know exactly what you mean. I wrote this when a flicker of light just starting shining through a time of despair. I’m so glad it spoke to you. I like the “torch of hope” theory 🙂

  2. The beginning of your poem was already strong. I love this. I was drown to the category depression, clicked it and came across this poem. As a person who has been enduring probably about two years of on and off depression stages, I know and can feel everything you said here. I’m starting to come out on the other end too, but I feel like depression is a continuous battle. Good job on this poem. I’ll keep on reading yours 🙂

  3. The short line form is both piercing and hammering. Really reaches down inside me as I read. Encroaching, without pause. Great write Norma. Glad there was a flicker of light though
